Chapter Five

“Still not answering.”

Jason just shrugged as Tamar dropped her phone back into her bag. It was the third time she had tried to call the owners of Grisedale Manor and still nobody was picking up—which was why she and Jason were currently in Jason’s car, driving up to visit the manor in person.

Merv had made one point clear in his call yesterday—his job was only to set the filming dates. He hadn’t bothered to confirm it with the location. That was for them to do.

If they say no, that will give us more time.

More time to do what, exactly?

Jason hit the indicator and pulled into the forecourt of a petrol station. They both got out of the car, Tamar heading into the shop while Jason unhooked the nozzle.

“You want anything?”

“Lucozade,” Jason called back.

The shop was empty but for one bored-looking cashier. As Tamar dropped two packets of crisps on the counter next to her drinks, she glanced idly out of the window and froze.

Reed’s sports car had just pulled up at the pumps.

Shit.

Automatically Tamar turned away from the window and lowered her head, letting her hair hang forward like a curtain. Her mind raced.

If I go outside, he’ll see me.

If I stay in here, he’ll see me when he comes in.

Maybe if I have my back turned, he won’t know it’s me.

The cashier was holding out her change, irritated. Tamar took it, along with the carrier bag, and wandered over to the magazine rack, keeping her back to the door. She stiffened as the piercing bleep of the door alarm sounded.

Is that him? Don’t look. Don’t look.

“Number seven,” she heard from behind her in Reed’s unmistakable smooth tones.

“Ten pounds.”

The ching of the till, scuffling footsteps, the bleep of the door. Tamar held herself still, waiting, not wanting to turn around yet.

“Well, look who it is.”

Oh God. Tamar fixed him with a steady eye, forcing herself to conceal her loathing.

Reed looked much the same as he always had. His hair was slicked back from his face, a style he had always thought made him appear younger. He was dressed from head to toe in black, except for a silver tie. And his face was twisted in a cold smirk that made Tamar’s hand tingle with the urge to slap him.

“Reed.”

“So how’s it going?” Reed arched one eyebrow, curling his lip. “How’s life for Britain’s newest star medium?”

“Fine, thank you. How’s the conference circuit?”

A faint ripple of distaste crossed Reed’s face. Tamar bit back a smile, noticing over his shoulder that Jason was paying at the counter.

“I hear you had a little incident with a TV crew this week.” Reed’s smirk recovered quickly. “Not as easy as it seems, is it?”

“Wow,” Tamar answered cheerfully, covering up the jolt her heart had made. “Our fame does travel fast.”

“It always does when people get hurt, darling,” Reed drawled. “You’ll soon see.”

When people get hurt? Tamar felt the butterflies subside. Clearly he had no idea what had really happened.

“All right, Reed?” Jason said from behind him.
